We have had a busy start to the week. Here are some of the things we have been up to:
We had a Fire Drill practice. All the students did a great job of moving out of the school quickly and silently. They also showed great responsibility in helping the kindergartners make sure they had a successful very first drill. I was so proud of the students as they let the Kinders stay together in a group so they would not get lost from their class. That act of responsible kindness will mean that next time there is a fire drill, they will feel secure and comfortable.
We started gym and music! It was fun getting a chance to work with friends, new and old, in another grade three class.
We went to the library and got to take out our first books of the year. A friendly reminder that the books must be kept in the big ziplock bag and books handled with clean hands. We want our library to grow and one we we can do this is to keep the books we already have! We feel lucky as there are many, many books in our class library too.
We have started the year by reviewing how to write a sentence. We are looking for work with:
- an upper case letter at the beginning
- punctuation (such as period, at the end)
- no upper case letters in the middle of the sentence
- letter formation that we can read easily
- a full and complete thought/sentence
You can help your child at home by discussing about sentences. For example, you can help them understand that 'On the table.' is not a complete sentence. You can also have them write a sentence and help them understand and correct letter reversals, misplaced upper case letters and end punctuation. A quick way too check they know their alphabet by heart and know the correct letter formation is to have them write out the alphabet. Once for lower and once for upper case. Then you will know which letters to work on with you child. We will also be working with them at school.
In math, one student was very interested in making calendars so we have been looking at the passage of time, such as months of the year and days in the week. We have been completing our own calendar and written everyone's birthday on it. In this fun activity, we learned how to read a chart. We will be answering some questions about our calendars, such as 'If it's the 4th today, what date will it be in a week's time?' Plenty of practice will help the students get ready to come up with their own questions.
Sorry, I have been bad about taking pictures. We have just been so busy!
