As we continue to establish routines, we had our second fire drill today. Last time our class remembered to use appropriate behavior. For example, all students know they have to walk silently in single file, following the class leader to the designated spot. The teacher follows the class to ensure the class door is securely shut and that everyone ahead of them gets out of the school safely. The students have to go around a corner so are out of sight of the class teacher and have to take responsibility to act appropriately.

Unfortunately, this time our class did not follow these expectations and it would be really helpful if parents could reinforce the need for safe practice.

We had a talk about it in class after. Many students apologized and I asked them, "Will you do it differently next time?" They sincerely thought they would be able to do a better job. I believe them:)

This connects well with our work on Beautiful Oops and Growth Mindset. We have worked to understand that mistakes are part of learning. Here is some beautiful work to share:

We sorted statements into fixed and growth mindsets. We then matched each fixed statement to its growth statement.

We found out that many scientists invented things like matches, microwave oven, purple dye and even potato chips did so as the result of an accident. Truly some Beautiful Oops!

We made 'accidents' into very creative drawings:

Ask your child about some of the accidental discoveries that scientists made.

We have started 'Rev Ups' in class. We read books looking for words that are interesting or less known. We talk about what the word means and we practice using the words in contextual sentences.
Visual language supports growing language development.

Please send your child to school with some money if you wish your child to purchase a book at the school's Scholastic Fair tomorrow. You can also visit the fair yourself, if you want, on Thursday evening or Friday morning.
