What a great end to the week. We met up with our Kindergarten buddies and helped them learn their numbers through a math game. We then read with them. It was amazing to see how each grade three student worked alongside their younger buddy, showing leadership and empathy. The grade three students did a great job of not simply telling their younger buddy what to do, but coaching them through the game, offering just as much help as was needed.

We are beginning to be ready to publish our copy of our story. Students have to make sure they meet the criteria of;

  • having an introduction that includes direct speech
  • having a problem in their story
  • having a solution in their story
  • revising their work so it makes sense
  • writing in complete sentences using upper cases, end punctuation and no stray upper case letters in the middle of sentences
We have been working on word problems and how to show our thinking. We have practiced showing our thinking through:

  • pictures
  • tally marks
  • number lines
The more ways you can get to a solution, the deeper your mathematical thinking.

An example of a word problem might be:

There were 34 bats flying through the night sky. 17 swooped down to the ground. How many were left. Ask our child to show you how they would solve this word problem using all of the above strategies. Why not make up some more word problems at home?

Next week marks Remembrance Day. Please take the time to discuss this important and solemn occasion. Our music teacher has included the following link:

Have a great weekend enjoying the last few days of snow free ground! Thank you for helping keep things calm at school by keeping Halloween candy at home. Sugar, food colorings, preservatives and quality learning do not mix! (But thank you so much for my Halloween bundle;). I was very touched by that thoughtful surprise today.)
